Theatre Rites and Manchester International Festival, Director: Sue Buckmaster

A group of dancers meet to make a film – but things get wonderfully weird when the camera takes on a life of its own…

Partly inspired by our year under lockdown where we all got used to looking at one another on screens, Theatre Rites emerged with their first live performance, and approached us to create a character that would feel at home on a children’s television programme, to be filmed and projected live on stage. We delved into our own experience building puppets for children’s television, and also inspired by the children’s characters of our childhood to design Terry, developing the look through sketches with feedback from director Sue Buckmaster. Terry was made using some classic puppet building techniques, like arms made from strings of large beads, and finished with specially dyed plume. Terry debuted in July 2021, with a cast and audience that were delighted to be together again.
