What do you name the newest V.I.P. (Very Important Puppet) for LNER? Meet Eleanor! This fast-rolling, train-loving mascot was born when M&C Saatchi UK came to us with a brilliantly bonkers brief: create a puppet who could dance, defy gravity, and light up the screen, à la Fatboy Slim’s iconic “Weapon of Choice” music video. With choreography that included aisle-strutting, ceiling-cartwheeling, and even a breakdancing head-spin, Eleanor had to be built with next-level flexibility and performance in mind. Designed by Andy Heath and fabricated with Jo Lakin, Katy Clare Brooks and Alicia Britt. Eleanor Costume by Helena Rose.
Crafted here at Talk to the Hand Studios, Eleanor was designed for movement. She’s lightweight, agile, and expressive. Behind the scenes, an incredible puppeteer trio brought her to life: Claire Roi Harvey, Alicia Britt, and Iestyn Evans. Working in sync, they maneuvered Eleanor through her gravity-bending routine with skill, precision, and just the right amount of sass. From the puppeteering rigs to the choreography rehearsals, it was a full-body workout but the result was a dazzling dance sequence that captured audiences’ hearts.
Since the launch, Eleanor’s gone from screen star to real-world celebrity. She’s made a number of live appearances (yes, including riding on her very own named train, glamorous, right?), charming fans young and old. Her mix of charm, confidence, and high kicks has made her an unforgettable ambassador for LNER. For more behind-the-scenes magic and insights from M&C Saatchi, check out their full interview here.
